Selling a calendar is in some ways like selling a bag of sugar, as both are commodities, with nothing to influence your purchase unless some differentiation is evident. In the case of calendars such as the Orkneycommunities Charity Calendar, and other charity and pictorial calendars, differentiation is evident as soon as you look inside, and see the pictures and stories, and are engaged or otherwise. The problem is how to get your customers inside the cover.

This has been taxing the mind of Orkneycommunities webmaster Steven Heddle, who is keen to sell as many of the Orkneycommunities Charity Calendar as possible and thus raise money for CLAN, Macmillan, and CLIC Sargent, who will receive all the proceeds.

The calendars are on sale in local shops (see below) and will be for sale online very soon as well, from a store on the Orkneycommunities website, but most shoppers don't have the time to leaf through a calendar at the counter while they make their mind up. To get round this hurdle Steven has compiled a video walkthrough of the calendar and loaded it up to YouTube- "It gives folk a chance to find out all about it and see what's in it at their leisure. Hopefully they will think it is worth buying, and worth giving as a reminder of Orkney to friends and relations at Christmas too. The downside is they have me droning on about it, but the sound can be turned off!"

The video walkthough is shown above, and is also in our In Pictures section.

If you wish to buy one, they are stocked in Wm Shearers (currently with the other calendars through the back, soon to move upstairs to the Christmas Shop), Bruces Stores (on the newspaper stand), CLAN, Lows Orkney, WR Tullock, Nimms, Rendall Furnishings, VAO, Papdale Stores, Stromness Golf Club, The Quernstone, and the Holm, Deerness and Toab shops.

Online sales will be linked from a banner on http://www.orkneycommunities.co.uk once testing is complete.

What is the Blue Window?

The Blue Window hopes to provide a service online akin to that of The Blue Door (see below), i.e. a free shop window to charitable or non-profit organisations.

This might take the form of providing advance notice or reports of events and fundraisers, promoting sponsored activities and providing links to Justgiving pages. Or it might just be saying who is in The Blue Door.

If you are interested in being featured here just get in touch, preferably by email and including the copy for the message you wish to get across.

Don't forget to look at the Events and Activities page as well to see what is going on in Orkney just now!

About the Blue Door

The Blue Door is a shop in Victoria Street, Kirkwall, which acts as temporary charity shop for organisations in Orkney who wish to raise funds. The organisation typically will be in for a fortnight, then move out to make way for the next one. The premises are made available to organisations by Mrs Rita Jamieson, the owner.

All About Orkney and The Blue Window are not connected to the Blue Door in any way, but admires its objectives and hopes to emulate them here.
