Orkneycommunities charity calendar hits the streets

E-mail PDF

The first Orkneycommunities charity calendar is now on sale, priced £6, from a number of outlets, mainly in Kirkwall at present, but hopefully from lots more if people get in touch with me.

If we sell them all, over £7,000 can be raised for CLAN, Macmillan, and CLIC Sargent.

The calendar features pictures from the Orkney Image Library on Orkneycommunities.co.uk, and comments from contributors that help tell the story behind the image. The calendar opens to A3 (297x420mm) for each month, is printed in full colour on heavyweight semi-glossy paper, has space for notes, and shows moon phases and school holiday dates. It also comes with an envelope for posting, so is an ideal gift for friends or expats outside Orkney, as well as for anyone with an interest in life here.

The range of pictures is truly diverse, but always interesting, and reflects the range of pictures that interests the users of the Image Library. Light at midnight, kids sitting on a whale, a phonebox in the snow glowing from within, fishing boats about to land on Shore Street, and the old red Leonards shop on Bridge Street all feature.

The calendar can be bought from Wm Shearer's, Bruce's Stores, Papdale Stores, Lows Orkney, Nimms, Rendall Furnishings, WR Tullocks, VAO and will also be on sale at the County Show.

What is the Blue Window?

The Blue Window hopes to provide a service online akin to that of The Blue Door (see below), i.e. a free shop window to charitable or non-profit organisations.

This might take the form of providing advance notice or reports of events and fundraisers, promoting sponsored activities and providing links to Justgiving pages. Or it might just be saying who is in The Blue Door.

If you are interested in being featured here just get in touch, preferably by email and including the copy for the message you wish to get across.

Don't forget to look at the Events and Activities page as well to see what is going on in Orkney just now!

About the Blue Door

The Blue Door is a shop in Victoria Street, Kirkwall, which acts as temporary charity shop for organisations in Orkney who wish to raise funds. The organisation typically will be in for a fortnight, then move out to make way for the next one. The premises are made available to organisations by Mrs Rita Jamieson, the owner.

All About Orkney and The Blue Window are not connected to the Blue Door in any way, but admires its objectives and hopes to emulate them here.
