Businesses in Orkney have always been alert to the possibilities of selling on the internet, as is clear when you speculatively try and find a domain name for this and realise they are all taken!
BuyOrkney.com, Orkneystore.com and OrkneysBest.com provide a service for a limited number of producers and manufacturers, but for the remainder of the businesses there have been significant obstacles in creating a functional store and providing an economical online payment system.
To a large extent this problem has been solved by the offerings from Amazon and eBay (although not really for fresh produce). Ebay allows sale of single items or creation of a store and payment through PayPal, and Amazon now will even provide a warehousing and fulfilment service if you wish to outsource this entrirely, with the power of its marketing and cross-selling at your disposal.
