Winners have been chosen for the Perfect Orkney House Design Competition which came to a close on Friday July 30.

Orkney Islands Council’s Development Planning and Regeneration Team ran the competition, which asked school children to design what they felt was an ideal house for Orkney, to help launch a consultation on the Draft Supplementary Planning Guidance ‘The Design of Housing in the Orkney Countryside’.

The consultation on this guidance runs until September 19 with copies of the guidance available on the Council website www.orkney.gov.uk.

The prize winners in each age group are:

5-7 years:
1st     Harvey Rendall
2nd     John Moar

8-11 years:
1st     Freya Johnston
2nd     Ilona Foubister

12-16 years:
1st    Bill Armstrong – Mortlock
2nd     Jake Houston

Prizes can be collected from the Development Planning and Regeneration team tent at the Dounby and County Shows later this month, where the winning entries will be on display. There will also be sweeties provided at the tent for everyone who entered.

The team would like to thank all entrants for their hard work and imaginative designs. There was a very high standard of entry from all age groups and it was a difficult task to choose winners. Well done!

News context

Orkney was served by two local newspapers, The Orcadian, and its sister paper Orkney Today, both papers being printed and published in Kirkwall, and coming out on a Thursday, until the Orkney Today was shut down in October 2010. The Orcadian continues, with a healthy circulation of around 10,000.

Further afield, Aberdeen's Press and Journal has a Northern Isles edition and carries Orkney news, and likewise the BBC website has a North East/Northern Isles section, reflecting Orkney and Shetland's traditional transport links with Aberdeen.

Orkneycommunities.co.uk is a focal point for the websites of over 100 community groups, and they can submit their news stories and events directly to its front page. But most news in Orkney emanates from the local authority, the Orkney Islands Council.
