E-mail PDF

Papa Westray will be enjoying an international contemporary art festival between 6th and 13th February.

The 2012 instalment of Papay Gyro Nights follows the succesful inaugural festival of 2011, and is the brainchild of locally based artists IVANOV + CHAN.

Taking advantage of the extremities of the festival's setting, climate and timing, a diverse range of themes and artforms will be explored, with emphasis on experimental film and video art in conjunction with performance, music and architecture.

The full programme is listed below (you may need to click Read More)

The festival is supported by the Danish Cultural Institute, Institut Francais and Land Art Papa Westray.

6-13FEBRUARY 2012
PAPAY GYRO NIGHTS ART FESTIVAL is an international contemporary art festival (mainly experimental film and video art in connection with visual art, performance, music and architecture) holding place in unique settings of extreme remoteness of the island Papa Westray (aka Papay, or Papey in Meiri), and in the time of extreme winter weather conditions. The idea of the festival has originated from the ancient Papay tradition of The Night of The Gyros (or Gygr, Gryla, Grylur, Grøleks, Skeklers as its know in other Nordic countries), which till the beginning of 20s century was celebrated on the island in the first full moon of February. Against as reconstructing what is gone and almost forgotten, the Festival is a reflection on the folktale, the island's landscape and heritage as well as interpretation of tradition and ritual through new developments in art, music and architecture. The Festival as a Research lab and the place for a discussion about interaction between new media, ideas in relation to tradition and ritual. During the Festival the Island will be transformed into art space and artworks will be screened and exhibited in old farm buildings, boat house, workshps, ruins and open landscape

LIstings appeal

This is currently a listings section, but wouldn't it be so much better if it was an entertainments section, with reviews, stories about upcoming events, and features about the local arts scene, past, present and future?

Of course it would!

This can easily take place if anyone wishes to send in news orreviews etc. If you fancy trying your hand at being a music critic or historian, or something along these lines, send an email to the address at the bottom of the page.

Equally, if you have a press release for an upcoming event, send it in!
